Please read instructions & notes thoroughly before installation.
Step 1 Outline Pet Door Opening
- The die-cut template is located in the center of pet door.
- Remove screws holding the frame together; lift out template.
- Center template (width) in middle of door. Tape in place.
- Position the top of the template 2" taller than your pet's shoulder.
Step 2 Mark the Holes
- With template taped in place, use a pencil to draw around the inside edge of template onto door.
- Use a nail or awl to mark inside edge corner holes (as indicated) and outer hardware holes.
Step 3 Drill the Holes
- Drill four 3⁄8" diameter inside edge corner holes.
- Then drill the eight 3⁄8" diameter outer door hardware holes.
Step 4 Cut the Opening
- Begin with one of the inside edge corner holes.
- Using a saber saw, cut along inside edge pencil line.
Step 5 Insert the Frames
- Insert outer frame (A) into opening from exterior side (frame must be flush with door surface).
- Place inner frame (B) into opening from inside door and hold in place.
Step 6 Install the Screws
- Install screws (C) and tighten until snug.

Can this be installed in a metal, glass, or garage door?The Ideal Ruff Weather can be installed in all doors with thickness between 3/4" - 1 3/4". For glass doors, you may need a glazier to help you, since you can't cut dual-pane or tempered units. If you have an overhanging garage door, the flap may warp over-time if it is left horizontal for too long. Also, since the frame does stick out further than most, you want to make sure that you have enough clearance when the door is raised. |
Will this work on a paneled door?The Ruff Weather Pet Door with the telescoping frame is designed to be installed on a flat surface. They can also be installed on an irregular surface as long as the material is 3/4" - 1 3/4" thick. You can fill in the gaps with battens or shims from your local hardware store. Add caulk to fill in the remaining space to seal in the doggy door. |
Can I install this into a wall?Yes, here is the Ruff Weather for Walls, which accommodates 2x4 and 2x6 stud walls (4 3/4" - 5 1/4" or 6 3/4"-7 1/4"). The wall entry/wall mount model with an optional wall kit also comes with double vinyl flaps for extreme weather and energy efficiency. If you do not want to buy a different door mount, you can purchase this door with the Ruff Weather wall kit. |
Does this pet door stay closed in the winter?This door does stay closed relatively well due to the double flap feature, as this is an economic all-weather pet door. It is a great affordable winter dog door option for those who live in a moderate to harsh climate conditions. If the winds get too strong, it comes with a good quality locking cover that can be used to close off the pet door. Cold weather will be stopped at the door. |
