ALUMINUM VS. VINYL PANELS

How to Determine if Your Window Frame is Vinyl or Aluminum:

  • Tap the frame: An aluminum sliding window will sound metallic while a vinyl one will make a dull, plastic noise.
  • Measure Track Width: Vinyl tracks are often slightly wider than aluminum. Aluminum tracks are generally 1” wide while vinyl tracks are about 1.5” wide.

Aluminum Panels: Aluminum Dragon panels fit aluminum windows with tracks at least 1” thick. They will fit vinyl windows with tracks at least 1” thick too. However, since vinyl doors generally have wider tracks the panel may wobble a bit.

Vinyl Panels: The Dragon Vinyl Panel is designed to fit in vinyl-framed windows with tracks at least 1” thick. The vinyl pet door panel framing will match your existing window for an aesthetic look. Vinyl is also excellent for cold weather, as it resists the “sweating” (condensation buildup) that aluminum can be prone to in cold climates.

How to Measure Track Width 

You’ll need to measure your window track to choose the correct pet door panel height. Make sure to measure the track thickness, which needs to be at least 1” to accommodate the panel.

Locking Sash Window Panels: To permanently lock your Dragon sash, you can install wood screws in the track immediately above the window on both sides. With this method, you would no longer be able to raise the window. For continued use of your window sash, the Charley Bar is the perfect solution. It unlocks in just a few seconds so you can access the sash window.
