Benefits of Cheese for Dogs

Cheese is a great training tool for dogs. It can be given in small amounts for a quick reward that your dog will love. Cheese also contains protein, calcium, vitamin A, essential fatty acids, and B-complex vitamins.

Cheese is also a great snack to conceal medications your dog needs to take. It’s important to choose a cheese that is safe for your dog. A couple of options include:

  • Cottage cheese
  • Mozzarella
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Swiss cheese

There are some types of cheese you should avoid giving your dog. Typically, older, moldier cheeses are not safe for dogs, such as:

  • Blue cheese
  • Brie
  • Feta cheese
  • Cheese with herbs

How Much Cheese Can Dogs Eat?

Your dog should eat no more than a few small bits of cheese each day. Any more than that can cause digestive upset and weight gain. The amount of cheese your dog can consume will depend on their weight and size, as well as their tolerance for lactose. Some dogs can’t tolerate any cheese.

It’s important to remember that cheese is high in fat and feeding it to your dog on a regular basis will likely result in weight gain. If your dog is in need of some healthy fats in their diet, fish oil is a better option. Additionally, make sure to choose a cheese that is easy for your dog to digest.

Lactose Intolerance in Dogs

Not all dogs can digest cheese. Although cheese contains significantly less lactose than whole milk, it can cause digestive upset in dogs with severe lactose intolerance. After feeding your dog cheese for the first time, observe them closely for any signs of discomfort.
